Protect Yourself from Getting Sick This School Year

It’s that time of year, we are a few weeks into the semester and you are getting into the groove of things. Nothing could go wrong, until you hear the symphony of aaa-chus and sniffles all around. Yes, unfortunately this is also the time where cold and flu season comes back to haunt us.  No one wants to get sick then get more work and headaches because of missed classes, so I have some simple tips to reduce the likelihood of illness.

-The first is very obvious, but have a healthy diet filled with fruits and vegetables. These will help you stay well and give you vitamins to help boost your immune system.

-Water is very important as you start to feel sick. If you happen to feel yourself getting sick or start sneezing, flush your system out with water. This can either reduce the amount of time you're feeling blah, or it can take the germ out of your system in one night.

-Another obvious tip is to keep your hands clean. Your hands are full of germs because of everything you touch, so keep your hands away from your mouth, nose, and the rest of your face! Wash your hands frequently. If you are worried about your hands drying out, use hand sanitizers. Hand sanitizers are great because they kill germs, and you can have fun different scents and change them as the seasons change. It is also a good idea to keep wipes on you to get rid of the germs on surfaces that you are going to use.

-One tip that I got from a pharmacist is to use zinc tabs to reduce the possibility of a cold developing. These will work if, for example, someone that’s sitting next to you in class sneezes! If you suck on the lozenge right then you will reduce the possibility of a cold developing. Keep a few of these in your bag at all times.

-Also keep tissues on you at all times. Don’t you hate it when people who are sick just use their hand or sleeve to wipe away their snot!? It’s really disgusting! To help prevent this problem keep tissues with you to share. This will also help reduce the possibility of having a dry nose.

-Another thing, be polite and do your best not to spread your germs! Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Disinfect your hands every time you use a tissue or touch anything that may be filled with germs. I can’t tell you how many times people forget these basic rules and they are sooo important.

This cold and flu season you cannot rely on other people to take care of their germs and cannot just think they will stay home when they are sick. You will always be exposed to germs daily and taking these steps can help you stay well this year.

Good luck~Katrina
