Jolly Friday: Pretty Little Liars and more!

Welcome to Jolly Fridays!  For this month, since trashy shows are scarce, I will be reviewing the new holiday specials that are coming out all throughout the month of December.  Today’s edition will feature ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars, The Fosters, and Switched at Birth Christmas specials, and Food Network’s Holiday Baking Championship.  Let’s get to it!

Pretty Little Liars Christmas Special

Mona is giving the liars tips on how to get Spencer off the hook for Bethany’s murder. Ali is having flashbacks and seeing ghosts, like Mona, in her dreams.  The liars are going to try and find something to pin the murder back on Ali, using Mona’s instructions. Everyone goes to Ali’s ice ball for a Christmas party. Ali comes in with a new crew of girls in masks. Cece shows up and she warns Ali to keep her guard up and that her ex friends are plotting against her. As Spencer and Hanna look for evidence in Ali’s house, A comes after the girls then hides among this wall full of masks, which was so creepy looking. This episode shows that even though Mona is dead, Ali is still afraid of her for some reason.  In her dreams it is predicted the Ali is going to die soon. Everyone enjoys Christmas until A leaves them a message outside with a Christmas tree.  Merry Christmas, bitches. -A

This episode was great!  I didn't know what to expect, since we're used to special Halloween episodes rather than Christmas; but I liked the Christmas episode specifically because it's unexpected!  While every other show is doing wholesome specials about the importance of family or any other traditional Christmas message, PLL added a dark twist to the season.  I honestly wanted to go to the ice ball (Aria's dress was to die for!) and I was actually nervous when A was in Ali's house.  (I'm not sure how I felt about Mona's ghost look though...  Creepy and fascinating, but a bit strange...)  There wasn't a second where I felt I was watching a cheesy Christmas special like any other show; this episode stayed true to PLL fashion!  And nothing beats ending a snowy Christmas night by the tree with a special message from A.  ;-)

The Fosters Christmas Special

It's Christmas and the kids are buying each other secret santa gifts. They do this so they don’t have to spend a ton of money on gifts. Stef is upset when she finds out her mother inherited over $100,000 from her late father (as compared to just a few thousand for Stef and the family), even though they were divorced and did not get along. Jesus wants to win this house decorating competition for a cash prize, but he can't spend much money to enter. Stef thinks that the kids don’t need to have fancy gifts this year from her mother. (In my opinion, if one is willing to spend the money, just be grateful for the gifts. Don’t complain about it!!) Lena is having problems with her half-brother and there is some drama with that… Stef is annoying, her wife gives her diamond rings and she doesn’t seem to appreciate them. There is an argument and it’s so stupid! Stef’s mom gives her the college funds that she wanted for the children.  After talking to the neighbor, Jesus decides to not enter the competition so he can give the neighbor something to look forward to for Christmas.  In the end, Callie gets Brandon an amazing gift.  Finally they go forward one year later to an ambulance picking someone up.

This show wasn’t too bad, but it's definitely not my favorite.

Switched at Birth Christmas Special

For this episode they did a Freaky Friday like show, where Daphne and Bay switch places like they were never switched at birth. This episode was really fun and it showed how life really wouldn’t be as good if they weren’t ever switched. All of the characters are happier when they are together and life is very merry. ABC Family also teases their next season and it seems like a lot of drama will happen. I did like this episode but I’m still not a total fan of this show.

Holiday Baking Championship

I have been wanting to watch this show because I love holiday baking! I wanted to see how these bakers get creative with holiday flavors.  For this episode they must make a delicious treat with peppermint and hot chocolate. Tera really wants to use the hot chocolate as much as possible but she is having a rough start because she set a paper towel on fire and had a cream pot overflow.  Erin makes a crème brûlée-like dessert, which is risky because it takes a long time to get the custard to set; and it really doesn’t seem to work out well for her, so she makes a warm pudding instead.   Naylet makes cute little doughnuts. Billy made a shortcake. Everyone does really well with their desserts.  Erin won the advantage in the next challenge.

For the next challenge, they must make 3 sweet breakfast dishes.  It's so weird because everyone is so nice to each other in the competition and will help each other out. Erin makes waffles and a cinnamon bun-like pastry. Bill does pancakes.  He also does sweet bread and scones. Tera makes crepes, a cream cheese surprise, and a bagel-like thing. Naylet is gonna make a sweet bread and little cakes. The judges thought that Billy did well, Terra didn’t make anything good except the coffee cake, Naylet did very well, and Erin didn’t do as well as she wanted. They decide that Naylet did the best. Bill wasn’t too happy and I do not really like him. The judges decide to send home Tera.

I love this show and everything looked so delicious!  YUM!
