Trashy Fridays: Virgin Territory and more!

Welcome back to another fantastic edition of Trashy Fridays!!!!! (applause) For this installment, we will continue to follow the stories from MTV's Virgin Territory and FYI's Married at First Sight, as well as trying a new, and very entertaining, show, VH1's Candidly Nicole.

Here we are, at episode 5 of Virgin Territory. This week we got a great episode, with Luke, Shelby, Anna, and the new girl Anike. Lets get to it!!

Luke had quite a few announcements for us in this episode. He got a buzz cut (ugh, still not making him look better...) and finally had a 3 month committed relationship (which he feels is an accomplishment, and it really isn't...) with Madelyn. Madelyn looks way too young for Luke (shes a freshman and he is a senior) and seems too immature to be in a relationship. Well, Luke thinks he is in love and wants to decide when exactly to marry her (before he graduates from med school, while in med school, etc.). While playing lacrosse, Madelyn gives Luke love letters for certain occasions (like when he's mad at her and such). She makes him open one letter and she basically says how she can't wait to marry him. (Wait, you have only been dating for 3 months, how do you know its love!?!) Luke and Madelyn celebrate their 3 month anniversary and Luke gives her a promise ring (basically saying that she won't cheat on him in any way and will not have sex). Then the best thing in the world happened- Luke said that he would wait til marriage and he is now off of the show!!!!!! Yes, I've been waiting for this moment for quite a few episodes and now I am just so happy that I don't have to hear about his weird morals on sex.

Next we go to Anna. In this episode, Anna, Alex, Anna's roommate, and her roommate's boyfriend go on a weekend trip. She is feeling the pressure to lose her virginity, because it is usually expected when couples go away. Anna is just feeling like most virgins, by thinking "Well, is it the right time and is this the right guy?" But Alex is willing to wait until she is ready. While on their way to the house where they are staying, her friend called her a slut because she believed that Anna's the one who initiate contact with Alex. The first night, Anna and her friend decide to make shrimp on the grill. These girls can't cook- they pour oil on the grill (and, shocker, it causes flames) and they just decide the shrimp is done when it catches on fire. (They also made fun of how they smell, like seriously it's a fish, what would you expect?) After eating, Anna and Alex go to their room and things get heated, until... Anna says that she's gonna throw up, and she does. She said she ate one raw shrimp (like, are you stupid? Duh, of course you got sick... please don't cook anymore). The next night, her friend makes fun of the fact that she is a virgin. (Wow, what a bitch.) Anna tells her that she doesn't think her virginity is a joke, and her friend killed the mood for her to lose her virginity that night. Anna and Alex go home and they tell each other "I love you". I'm not sure if Alex really loves Anna, but he does seem like a decent guy at least. I am hoping that in 1 or 2 episodes Anna will be off the show. She isn't the smartest person and is quite annoying at times. But I do believe that she does a good job of giving the virgin's true point of view on the issue of sex.

Then we have Shelby, who is still set on getting a boob job. In the beginning of this episode, she has a consultation for bigger boobies. The doctor suggests that before she chooses a size she tries wearing bags of rice in her bra so that she can be sure she'll get the right size. Shelby thinks that with bigger boobs, she'll have the perfect body. (Um, not needed, girl.)  She shares with us that she has insecurities about her body and began to develop an eating disorder when she was dating her first boyfriend because she never felt like her body was good enough. Her parents caught the disorder and made sure that she never carried out those awful behaviors (like making her sister go to the bathroom with her to make sure she wouldn't purge after eating). After this point she felt like her parents had always been disappointed in her. They share with her that they will no longer help her pay to get bigger boobs. (Which kinda upsets her.) Due to her doctor's suggestion, she wears rice in her bra and goes out with her friends to a bar. There she gets a lot of guys staring at her chest. She kinda likes this attention, but I really do not think that is the type of attention that she wants from guys. At the bar she sees her crush, Scott, and nothing really happens with him. The interactions that she has with him makes her question if he's interested or not, so we will have to see where this relationship goes. I feel so bad for Shelby, especially for her body confidence problems. Girl, let me tell you, you are pretty the way you are and you do not need surgery to change yourself. If a guy can't accept you for the way you are, then he really isn't worth it. I really hope that her confidence increases and she realizes how beautiful she truly is.

Finally we have the new girl, Anike. Anike is a 20 year old virgin, with a boyfriend who survived being in the friendzone for 5 million years (or, just about one year). She announces to us that she has decided to have sex on her anniversary with Julian, her boyfriend. Julian is excited, so he has an app on his phone that has been counting down the days. This countdown is making Anike very nervous and it makes her think that she really doesn't want to lose her virginity yet. Actually, she says that she would rather keep her virginity and have sex with Julian at the same time, but that's impossible.  Anike shares with us that she was used to being spoiled and living the high life, but after her parents got divorced it all went down hill. Her house doesn't look as good and she had to support her mom for a long time (which is embarrassing for her, she really doesn't want her friends knowing that she struggles with money, and that must be hard for her). She wants to launch her own clothing line, SAV, so she decides to have a fundraiser at her house to accomplish her goal. Julian was 3 hours late to the party, and this upsets her. Anike tells him that she really needed him there for support and he responded that her dreams shouldn't matter. (OMG, I was rooting for you because you seemed like a great guy, but never tell your girlfriend that you do not care about her dreams. Big Strike One For Julian!) Anike gets mad and shares that she doesn't feel like having sex with him anymore on their anniversary, which seems to disappoint him. Julian was probably planning to make that night really special and she really should've shared her concerns about sex earlier. Anike makes 90 dollars to start her clothing line and she is really proud of this achievement.  I really like Anike, she seems to have her values in check! Julian needs to be patient and needs to understand her point of view. It's understandable that she's nervous about losing her virginity. I believe that she and Julian will have sex, but I'm not exactly sure when. Julian has his pros and cons, but I believe overall that he is a solid boyfriend for her.

So this episode was really great! Luke is gone finally and I'm glad not to see him again. I really want to see what happens next episode, but it seems that we have a Super Virgin with the new person coming... This guy they showed hasn't even kissed a girl. I hope he isn't annoying. Well we'll just have to see how this goes...

Checking back in on Married at First Sight, specifically the episode “Intimacy”, we can see the couples have still not progressed much.  Doug and Jamie are trying to get more comfortable with each other, Jason and Cortney are happy but worried about their schedules and communication, and Vaughn and Monet are fighting.  About the same things as usual.  Shocker.  Every couple shares a concern that they don’t have enough time in this short social experiment to really get to know each other (duh) and make the decision to stay married or not, but I would think if they really felt they needed more time and they thought they might work out, they could just choose to stay married after the experiment ended…  They can always get a divorce later on, if necessary.

Doug and Jamie are still taking things slow, which I think is smart for them, as the other couples definitely seem to bicker more.  I’m not sure if that’s because they rushed their relationships (in a sense of intimacy, not marriage, because, well, married at first sight, of course they rushed) or if it’s just their clashing personalities, but Doug and Jamie’s plan seems to be working.   There were a few cute moments for the two, such as Jamie mentioning that Doug got her a pillow for their one-week anniversary and their dance lesson at the end.  However, when the couple received the wedding pictures, well, we got a reminder of just how rocky the wedding was.  The pictures were not exactly the type you put on display…

Jason and Cortney are strange.  They seem really happy and like they could have a successful marriage, but they have serious communication issues.  It’s weird that Jason is so guarded, considering he signed up to marry a complete stranger.  They also haven’t discussed kids at all- that would make sense if they were just dating, and it makes sense even in this situation that they haven’t yet made any real plans for children.  But, why haven’t they even shared desires for a big/small family, adoption, fostering, even not wanting kids at all!?  On the other hand, their wedding pictures are adorable and look completely natural!

As for Vaughn and Monet, their arguing is just annoying.  There’s no way they can stay married and be happy when the same issues just keep coming up.  They’ve improved their communication skills a bit, though, since their discussion in the beginning of the episode was a lot calmer than previous ones, and they acknowledge each other’s concerns more than they did before.  Vaughn stated that he thought things should have been somewhat smooth, because they both wanted to be married prior to the experiment, but hello, Vaughn!  You guys were strangers before this!  It’s not a typical situation!  Vaughn also said that if Monet had moved into his place, he would’ve gone out of his way to cook for her and make her feel comfortable.  I don’t buy it.  He has expressed his desire for a wife that cooks lavish meals for him regularly many times, so I doubt he would cook for her, and sulking when he feels she is being too talkative and energetic wouldn’t exactly make her feel comfortable…  The wedding pictures weren’t awful, but they weren’t nearly as natural looking as Jason and Cortney’s.

I found myself getting bored about halfway through the “Intimacy” episode.  The beginning was heavily focused on Vaughn and Monet’s issues (which are always the same, yawn).  Plus, I think the show was far more interesting when episodes were centered on an event such as the wedding, the honeymoon or finding a place together.  Now it’s hard for the show to keep my attention.  (Honestly, I was doing some online shopping during the commercials and barely noticed, or cared, when the show came back on.)

Now, onto a new show for Trashy Fridays- Candidly Nicole.  This show is apparently considered a reality series, but it has to be the least realistic reality show I’ve seen in a while.  It doesn’t even try to be realistic; it’s just Nicole Richie going about her “daily life” in an exaggerated fashion.  In the most recent episode, Nicole goes to work with a friend at Who What Wear, and proceeds to dance around crazily and invade people’s personal space.  Now, as a successful fashion designer, we can assume Nicole understands how to dress and behave appropriately and professionally for business meetings and important events.  She must be at least somewhat business-savvy.  Candidly Nicole is over the top and has few redeeming qualities; but it’s fun to watch.  ;-)
